With preparedness and training, Onyx Services
has had zero accidents to date.
Safety is a priority for our employees and our clients. All projects designed, engineered and bid include a comprehensive HAZID review by our HSE and operations group. ONYX has earned a reputation in the industry as a leader in safety by proactively identifying and mitigating potential risk during the planning and execution phases including the performance of a thorough post job analysis. We believe that all incidents can be prevented through proper planning, mitigation and that working safely is an integral part of everyone’s job.
We ensure that all personnel are trained in every aspect of commercial diving and occupational safety. At Onyx, we feel that using targeted safety training is much more effective than using minimum, non-specific safety training because we feel it better addresses the tasks at hand that the employee will be performing. Our employees train with Veriforce’s pipeline specific OSHA modules monthly that are interactive, comprehensive, and a good fit for our employees. Our safety team provides up to date operating and safety manuals along with project specific procedures. We follow safety management guidelines such as Risk Assessment, Job Hazard Environmental Analysis (JHEA) and Management of Change (MOC). Our team complies with all statutory, governmental, industry and customer rules, regulations and best practices.
Every employee and subcontractor must attend safety orientation training and be drug tested prior to performing work on the right-of-way. Our drug plan and alcohol Misuse Prevention Plan complies with all requirements of the DOT Research and Special Program Administration requirements of 49 CFR Parts 199 and 40. We are a member of the Pipeline Testing Consortium.
- Pre-employment drug testing and background check as required by DOT
- Random drug tests required through period of employment
- Post-accident drug testing required for on-the-job incidents
- Non-DOT drug testing conducted upon client request
- Positive tests result in immediate removal of employee from client site and termination of employment
The Operator Qualification (OQ) law, 49 CFR §192 and §195, affects those who work in the oil and gas pipeline industries. The purpose of the law is to reduce accidents related to human error by ensuring that individuals who perform certain identified tasks are qualified to do so. In other words, OQ is a safety initiative based upon quality.
Onyx has responded to this operational challenge by not just meeting the bare minimum of the law, but by going above and beyond expectations. We are leaders in this area through our investment in dedicated personnel and resources. Operator Qualification is an everyday priority for us at Onyx Services. All field personnel are trained and evaluated using protocols and programs established by several different organizations, including NCCER, Veriforce, OQSG, ADCI, Houston Area Safety Council, CSCCB, DSWG, NCMS, ISNetworld, and OSHA.
